HENRY VIII's Lost Palace - WHITEHALL
#henryviii #tudorhistory #tudorpalace
In 1698, the Palace of Whitehall, the official residence of the British sovereign, was burnt to the ground in a devastating fire. It was never replaced and very little of it now survives. In this video, I trace the origin of the palace, a residence stolen from Cardinal Wolsey from Henry VIII, and how Henry VIII and successive Tudor and Stuart sovereigns developed it. I look at contemporary images of the palace to get some sense of what Henry VIII's lost palace looked like, and then explore what remains of it above and below ground.

The Medieval Painted Church at Slapton in Northamptonshire
Переглядів 7 тис.14 днів тому
#medievalart #medievalhistory #reformation #iconography What did medieval churches look like before the English Reformation? Well, Slapton in Northamptonshire has a delightful old church that provides a little insight into this. A very simple, rural parish church, the inside is covered in a series of remarkable wall paintings of the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries with images of the saints a...
Elizabeth - The Forgotten Stuart Princess

#stuarts #royalfamily #britishroyals #disability Charles I and Henrietta Maria had six children who survived infancy, the story of five of these is very well known. There is one who is forgotten in history - Elizabeth, their second daughter, who died in 1650 aged fourteen, having spent most of her short years in virtual house arrest as the English Civil War raged around her. In this video, I te...

#hungary #crown #regalia The Holy Crown of Hungary, also known as St Stephen's Crown, is one of Hungary's greatest cultural treasures. Dating back to the eleventh century, the crown has witnessed many vicissitudes in the nation's history; it has been stolen and hidden, and it has even left the country entirely. In this video, I look at this object in some detail, its importance in the political...

I'm going to be curmudgeonly. The gem-like quality of your videos comes from how you describe things and put it into context. A drone shot, of however magnificent a building, doesn't reach that standard. Please narrate! (Also, we've just put a drive to Snettisham into the diary for next week. So there's that...)

@dizwell I love these shorts with simply music (especially beautiful music such as this one) There isn't much time to narrate in a short other than the name of the place anyway. For the rest: bum on seat, crack your fingers and set Google into action ! 😁 Honestly doing research is so easy these days (don't know if you knew the days of traipsing to libraries but it was something else!) You don't have to be spoon-fed everything for Heaven's sake!

I'm not against the British monarchy, I just don't believe in monarchy as a form of government. I think that in the age in which we live monarchies, as much as religion, are things we should let go as they belong in the past and is high time we understand and accept that. We should know better by now. However, I enjoy art and I deeply respect the skill and the dedication those artisans devote to maintain those jewels and the memory they perpetuate.

Allan..would you more inclined to see the revival and rebuilding of England's monastic ruins and canonry's to their former glory and to be put into active use as per their original intent, with a monastic rule, monk and nuns the whole lot, or to keep the ruins as they are currently today?...personally, and I know many will disagree with me, I am inclined towards the former..snd let me go a little further and ask that if you are inclined towards the former, would you still be, even if it meant the destruction of remaining medieval ruins or structures, even if it meant the rebuilding of it in the same exact medieval manner..as it originally looked when first built? God bless Mary protect +++

Very interesting video, but leaves out some details -- why? Lest it appear to be Catholic "propaganda"? Why not fill in the blanks and let the viewership decide? As she hastened toward her death, the Queen had visions of herself with her body exceedingly lean and fearful in a light of fire, as a figure surrounded by flames, as having a chain of iron around her neck. She threw out the Protestant prelates because they were, as she called them, "hedge-priests" -- she knew they were without the power to absolve her of her sins and give her the true Sacraments. Despite having sworn to uphold the Catholic faith, she had made it a capital offense to be a Catholic priest and so set up for herself an unhappy death. Yes, it is a cautionary tale, and the priests were completely justified in using it as such.

Thank you for this video. On the way to our children's wedding in Eastern Europe, we had a long layover in London near Heathrow. The 2022 London Marathon was postponed due to the death of the Queen so all of our Bus stops and boat tours were canceled because it was rescheduled to the day we were in London. We had to figure out how to get around. I was the only one that loved England's history. So we worked our way to Buckingham Palace and saw the changing of the guards but did not get to see any of the Roman wall or the Tower of London. Thanks to your video I now know I was traipsing around the areas you covered and could label some of my photos properly.
